How to Turn Your Weaknesses Into Strengths in Real Estate

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, which means that there are always areas that you can work to improve. The hardest part sometimes is knowing exactly how to turn things around to your advantage. In today’s post, we’ll take a look at some of the steps you can take to turn your weaknesses into strengths, so that you can be an even better real estate agent.

At Continuing Education for Licensing, Inc. in Texas, we know that it’s important to obtain your real estate license, and maintain continuing education requirements to renew it. With that in mind, be sure to contact us to learn about the various online courses we offer to help you get the real estate license you need.

1. Seek Guidance From a Trusted Source

One of the best ways to help yourself to grow and change weaknesses into strengths is to seek help from someone you respect and trust. Typically, people who are older and more experienced in a specific area will have great insight and advice to help guide you in the right path. While age doesn’t always equal maturity, it’s a good idea to look at your sphere of influence and identify one or two people who you could invite to mentor you. You might just be surprised at how well they really know you and can help you improve some of your weaknesses to the point that they become strengths.

2. Identify Your Weaknesses

While this step might seem silly or irrelevant, stay with us a moment to understand the importance. If you don’t know what your weaknesses are, then you will not be able to target them specifically and transform them into strengths. This may actually be one of the hardest steps to take, as no one really enjoys looking at the areas where they don’t do well, but it is critical to be honest with yourself if you truly want to improve. Rather than getting caught up in trying to list every single weakness, and potentially feeling overwhelmed, start with identifying just three weaknesses. In addition to being a much more manageable list, you’ll likely feel much more able to tackle these areas.

3. Consider the Corresponding Strengths

One of the best parts of this exercise is that you’ll be able to see how each weakness has a corresponding strength. Take a minute to identify three weaknesses that you’d like to improve upon. Once you have written them down, think about what their corresponding strength is. For example, if you feel that you are disorganized, inflexible, and stubborn, then consider that your strengths might include being creative, organized, and dedicated. While we’re not trying to say that by doing this exercise you’ll realize you have no weaknesses, we are trying to say that you can find ways to see both sides of these character traits, and begin to find ways to become more organized, flexible, and reasonable. By working on this, you’ll be able to multiply your strengths!

4. Partner With Other People’s Strengths

Depending on where you are in your real estate career, you may or may not be able to hire team members. With that in mind, consider finding ways to partner with others who have strengths in the areas you don’t. One of the great benefits of this arrangement is that not only will both of you benefit from working with someone whose strengths balance the other’s weaknesses, but your clients will benefit as well. Additionally, you may discover that spending time with your real estate partner will help you to slowly adopt some of their behaviors and attitudes so that you grow stronger in the areas you’re focused on.

5. Look for Others Who Share Your Weakness

Okay, this last step in the exercise might seem a bit odd. If you’re struggling in a particular area, why would you choose to work with someone who has the same weakness? Think about the expression — necessity is the mother of invention — and consider how this could be the turning point for weaknesses. We are often able to see others much more clearly than we see ourselves, which means that you just might be able to discover a way to help someone who struggles with the same weakness you do. When that happens, you’ll be able to apply the solution you came up with to your own attitudes and behaviors.

As a real estate agent, you will always be working with a lot of different people, from clients and other real estate agents to brokers and lenders. You can help yourself be even more successful in your chosen career by actively looking for ways to improve your weaknesses. No one expects you to be perfect, but you know how proud you’ll be when you discover that you are feeling less stubborn, disorganized, and inflexible.
