What Are the Continuing Education Requirements for Real Estate?

As a real estate agent, you worked hard to complete the courses that were required for you to take the Texas real estate licensing exam. You put in long hours of study, which paid off when you passed the exam and become an official agent. Make sure that you don’t let your license expire by contacting Continuing Education for Licensing today to learn which courses you need to take to renew your license and stay active as a real estate agent.

Standard Requirements

In the state of Texas, you must renew your real estate sales agent license every two years. You will receive a renewal notice approximately 90 days, or three months, before your license expiration date. You may not renew your license prior to receiving this notification; however, you are allowed to renew your license up to six months after the expiration date. If you wait to renew your license after six months and up to two years past the expiration date, then you will have to apply for a reinstatement of your license.

There are two types of real estate licenses in Texas. We will cover each of these and some of their individual requirements below.

1. Sales Apprentice Education (SAE) Requirements

  • A total of 270 qualifying real estate course hours
  • 4 hours each of TRECs Legal Update I and Legal Update II
  • Submit qualifying course completions at least 10 days before renewing your license

2. Active Sales Agent Requirements

  • A total of 18 hours of continuing education courses
  • 8 hours of TREC Legal Update I and II
  • 10 hours of elective continuing education courses

There are a couple of ways to renew your license when you have completed all of the requirements. You can either renew your license online or through the mail. Please make sure to speak with one of the team members at Continuing Education for Licensing for assistance with your individual license requirements.
